Q: What can a disc tell us about our throws?
Hi Friends, Teammates & Mentors,
We at Disc Sense want to introduce you to our project. Over the past few years we have spent more than a little of our free time working on a wireless sensor to measure various aspects of disc flight. When we first attached sensors and an SD card to a disc we had no idea what we would see. Since then we have learned each throw contains dozens of insights if only there were an easy way to measure and digest the information. We are working on a tool to do just that and believe this product has potential to help all disc sport athletes improve their throws.
What do we mean by insights? Imagine knowing the disc velocity and angle when you release the disc; or knowing how much spin is on your forehand versus your backhand; knowing how long your windup and release take and whether or not your pump fakes resemble your actual throws. Now imagine being able to benchmark your metrics to other players to help you target the best opportunities for improvement. We plan to provide these metrics and more allowing anyone that is interested the insights they need to improve.
Q: What can a disc tell us about our throws?
A: Quite a lot.
App mock-up
With the help of friends and family we have raised enough money to build the custom electronics needed to make a sensor that is light enough and small enough to attach to any disc and to measure every throw. In a month or two we plan to have an advanced prototype quite similar to the intended final product. We would like to show this device to as many people as possible when it is ready. In the interim, we have a working version of our device made with off the shelf electronics that we are using to refine our design and algorithms. Using this prototype we are improving our data collection and analysis to ensure the metrics we capture are as accurate as possible and available to the user in close to real time.
You received this message because we know you in some way but we do not plan to spam you regarding this project. Since we don’t have fancy (expensive) email marketing tools we humbly ask you to complete the linked survey to OPT IN for future communication. Otherwise, we won’t bug you.
Finally, because this is a side project it is taking us FOREVER to complete. If you think this idea is cool and want to be a part of our team there are endless ways to help (a little or a lot). If you’re interested please note that in the survey and we will follow up regarding what is needed and how we can compensate you for your time.
In no particular order, here are opportunities to help;
App development
Data analysis of IMU data including matrix algebra and quaternion math
Marketing and communication
Feature development and validation
Is there a throw you want to improve?
Do you know someone with gold standard throws?
Funding & investment
Piloting the product when our next prototype is ready
Thanks & Happy Hucking,
Luke & Devin
