FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

what is discsense?

DiscSense is a lightweight sensor in flexible housing and a companion app designed to help disc sports athletes improve their throws. By measuring and reporting various throwing metrics, DiscSense provides objective data and insights to help you understand and refine your technique. It is the only device designed to help both Disc Golf and Ultimate players improve their throws and disc coaches to provide actionable feedback to players.

How does the discsense sensor work?

The sensor attaches to your disc. It tracks various aspects of your throw, and this data is visualized through the DiscSense app on your iOS or Android device. The sensor and app together provide the insights you need to improve your game.

what metrics does Discsense track?

DiscSense tracks and reports metrics including throw speed, spin (rotational speed), arm speed, angle (release angle, disc angles), and location. For Ultimate players, it also helps track metrics like velocity, and potentially time metrics such as windup, release, time to fake & switch grips. These metrics provide insights into velocity and angle at release, how much spin is on different throws, and potentially timing aspects of your throw.

who is discsense for?

DiscSense is designed for all disc sports athletes, specifically Disc Golfers and Ultimate Players. It’s a tool that can benefit players of any level. It’s also a valuable training tool for coaches in both sports.

can i use discsense with my own discs?

Yes! This is a key feature. The DiscSense sensor tag attaches to ANY disc. You can practice with your existing collection without being limited to specific discs.

How is DiscSense different from other disc tracking products?

DiscSense has some key differentiators:

  • Versatile Attachment: DiscSense is a sensor tag that attaches to any disc, allowing you to use your preferred discs.
  • Dual Sport Focus: DiscSense is specifically designed to help both Disc Golf and Ultimate players improve, offering metrics relevant to both sports.
  • Pricing: DiscSense is expected to be priced competitively at $229 for the sensor.
  • Focus: DiscSense focuses on providing the insights you need to improve your game, aiming to make the data understandable and actionable.

Is DiscSense legal for use in official Disc Golf or Ultimate tournaments?

DiscSense is intended as a training tool for practice and field work, not for competitive play where modifying the disc’s flight path is prohibited.

Is the sensor waterproof?

DiscSense’s sensor is water-resistant.

What devices are compatible with the DiscSense app?

The DiscSense app is available for iOS and Android devices.

How much does DiscSense cost? Are there subscription fees?

The price for the DiscSense sensor is $229. When participating in our pre-campaign, Kickstarter VIPs can purchase it for $149. We are also currently working on rental options.

Can coaches use DiscSense? How can it help coaching?

Yes, DiscSense is a valuable tool for coaches in both Disc Golf and Ultimate. Coaches can use objective data on metrics like spin, velocity, and angle to simplify instruction for beginners, provide measurable feedback, and help players understand foundational concepts. Data can also potentially be used to establish benchmarks or a “belt” system for tracking player advancement and consistency. It can also help distinguish between poor execution and poor decisions.

How can DiscSense help beginners?

For beginners, DiscSense provides objective data on fundamental metrics like velocity, spin, and angle at release. This can make understanding proper throwing mechanics easier than relying solely on verbal directions. Coaches can use this data to provide clear guidance and track initial progress.

How can DiscSense help experienced players?

Experienced players can use DiscSense for detailed analysis of their throws, identifying inconsistencies and refining specific aspects of their technique like release angle, spin rate, and windup path. It can help in characterizing disc flight, matching discs to arm speed, and understanding how discs change over time. Players can analyze data to distinguish between bad decisions and bad execution. It’s also useful for comparing stats with teammates and analyzing pulls in Ultimate.

Does DiscSense provide feedback or suggestions for improvement?

DiscSense provides the insights you need to improve. It gives you guidance based on data, though the current level of automated feedback or suggested improvements is in development. The Scott Stokely partnership plans to integrate the device into his teaching program.

Is DiscSense for beginners or experienced players?

DiscSense is designed to benefit players of all skill levels.

For Beginners: It’s incredibly easy to use—just attach it to your disc and start throwing. The app provides a clear, simple way to see your key metrics (like velocity and spin), helping you understand your fundamentals from the very first throw.

For Experienced Players: DiscSense offers the high-fidelity data you need to fine-tune your game. By tracking metrics on every throw, you can identify subtle inconsistencies, compare your performance over time, and achieve unparalleled performance.

How does the DiscSense sensor ensure it is perfectly centered, and will it cause my disc to wobble or affect the flight data?

We understand that centering is critical for accurate data and true disc flight. DiscSense uses a patent centering mechanism designed to easily and consistently place the sensor in the center of any disc. Our design achieves a high degree of precision, getting the device’s center to approximately +/- 1mm of the disc’s rotational center. This precise placement is sufficient to prevent noticeable wobble or impact on the disc’s stable flight path, ensuring the metrics you receive—like velocity, spin, and angle—are objective and reflect your actual throw mechanics.

I’m concerned about the sensor falling off the disc during a powerful throw and getting lost. How securely does DiscSense attach?

The DiscSense sensor is housed in a durable, flexible material and uses a secure attachment method that is designed to withstand powerful throws and the usual impacts a disc experiences. The mechanism creates a strong, non-slip grip that keeps the sensor securely in place even during high-velocity throws.  We’ve extensively tested the attachment with both Disc Golf drivers and Ultimate discs to ensure maximum reliability and prevent the sensor from detaching mid-flight. We are continuing to evaluate and improve our attachment method for the most extreme impacts.
